A replica industry history lesson...."To Dune Buggy or not to Dune Buggy"
In the beginning (1964) there was an enterprising fellow who created the famous "Dune Buggy" often called the "Beach Buggy" as well. It was simply equipped:
1500 cc VW Type I air-cooled 4 cylinder carbureted Beetle 50 hp Engine
rear mounted configuration
swing axle 4 speed transaxle
shortened stock VW Beetle pan
VW Beetle front and rear suspension
drum brakes
In the mid-1970's another enterprising fellow developed a replica of the 356A Porsche Speedster often just called a Speedster. Utilizing the Dune Buggy chassis it was also simply equipped:
1500 cc VW Type I air-cooled 4 cylinder carbureted Beetle 50 hp Engine

VW Beetle front and rear suspension

In late 2002 yet another enterprising fellow decided to take the 356A replica from the Dune Buggy classification to a modern 21st Century car classification and offer the Speedster, weatherproof Cabriolet and Coupe versions as well. They are not simply equipped:
2500 cc water-cooled 4 cylinder overhead cam fuel injected Subaru 170 hp engine
high performance mid-mounted configuration
automatic overdrive or optional 5 speed manual transaxle
custom structural tube chassis featuring full surround protection
